SUZMUN II - May 22, 2009

Representing Namibia in the Economic and Social Council.
Topic of resolution: Combating the illicit trade of flaura and fauna.

Major resource is CITES, the Convention on the Illicit Trade of Endangered Species.
It organizes the trade of endangered species.

A program under this convention that is related to Namibia and illicit trade is MIKE.
MIKE stands for Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants.
The web page describes in detail the methods used by CITES to stop the illegal trade in elephant tusks.
This brochure has a nice description of the program.

Another program organized by CITES is called ETIS, the Elephant Trade Information System.
Instead of monitoring the killing of elephants, this program puts people out in the market, searching for ivory products and collecting information on where they are found and how much they cost. The ETIS program describes the trade in illegal elephant products.
